A total of 24,929 households spread across nine Local Government Areas in the State are to benefit from Conditional Cash transfer programme initiated by the Federal Government in Collaboration with Akwa Ibom State Government.
The Honourable Minister for Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hadjia Sadiya Umar Farouq disclosed this today at the Flag off and Payment of Conditional Cash Transfer to benefiting households at Holy Child Primary School, Nung Udoe Itak, Ikono Local Government Area.
The Federal Government who in her address said that, President Muhammadu Buhari has prioritized social protection intervention to pull 100 million people out of poverty over the course of 10years, revealed that, a total of 24,929 vulnerable homes will be supported with cash sum of N993,450,000 across the 30% Local Government Area in the Akwa Ibom State.
She enumerated the nine benefitting Local Government Areas and vulnerable households to include; Eastern Obolo of 2,170 households to receive N86,790,00; Mkpan Enin with 2,889 households,N131,940,000; Nsit Atai of 3,657 households,N145,660,000; Nsit Ubium of 2,213 households, N88,110,000; ONNA of 3,058 households, N121,860,000; Oruk Anam of 2,523 households, 100,920,000; Ukanafun of 1,935 households, N76,770,00, Uruan of 3,169 households, N126,110,000 and Ikono of 2,889 households will receive N115,290,000.
The Honourable Minister added that the least and the highest amount of payment to each household benefiting from the programme will receive Thirty Thousand Naira, and Fifty Thousand Naira respectively.
The Akwa Ibom State Governor, His Excellency, Mr. Udom Emmanuel who received the minister said the conditional Cash Transfer is aimed at reducing poverty by making welfare programmes conditional upon the beneficiaries fulfilling certain requirements.
The State Governor who spoke through the Deputy Governor, Mr. Moses Ekpo MFR commended the President, Muhammadu Buhari GCFR for establishing programmes aimed at alleviating poverty in the nation through the National Social Investment Programme, Trader-moni, Market-moni, Farmer-moni, the Conditional Cash Transfer and N-Power.
He said, his administration has invested heavily in the free and compulsory education programme for the benefits of students from primary to senior secondary schools levels. He added that the policy is particularly targeted at the very poor, being an affirmative action to enable indigent children catch-up with kids from better-off backgrounds.
Governor Emmanuel added that, the alleviation of poverty for the poorest of the poor is at the heart of our social contract with the people and that his administration is having supporting legal infrastructure against any form of social exploitation through the Implementation of Child’s Rights Law aimed at protecting the vulnerable in the State.
He appealed to agencies responsible for the implementation of the programme to operate with similar passion, patriotism and national consciousness of Mr. President himself by ensuring that all sections of the country benefits.
The Commissioner, for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr. Ini Adiakpan commended the Federal Government for implementing the programme in Akwa Ibom State. She said the benefit of implementing the conditional cash transfer intervention in Nigeria has been enormous especially in health, nutrition and education. She added that the programme seeks to break the cycle of poverty.
Dr. Adiakpan revealed that Akwa Ibom State keyed into the programme in the middle of 2019 with nine pilots local Government Areas representing 30% of the entire Local Government in the State.
She lauded, the State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel for executing and implementing life touching Social Investment Programmes in the State.
She called on corporate organizations, faith based organizations to complement government efforts in assisting the poor and vulnerable to grow above poverty line. She appealed to the benefiting households to make judicious use of the money.
The Chairman of Ikono Local Government Area, Hon. Itoro Columba thanked The President Muhammadu Buhari for implementing the conditional cash transfer in the state and commended the State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel for providing enabling environment for the overall success of the programme in the State.
